The man was insane. For most of Ivans life, he was, with his mother, held hostage by his father.The man was a killer. And he took sick pleasure in having his family watch his deeds. Even forcing them to participate in some way.He would devise complex puzzle to trap people he had abducted and instruct Ivan to solve them. If he got one of the step wrong, the victim would surfer the consequences, mostly in the form of mutilation.That man reveled in watching his son struggle to save those people.
