In the quiet room, three people sat around the little round table.
Qiqi sat in the middle, drawing with a colored pencil.

Jiang Mo Chen observed him, with only one thought running through his mind——if he could go back twenty minutes in time, he would turn down Yan Qing Chi’s invitation without any hesitation.
He would tell Qiqi that he still had matters to attend to, or promise QiQi to accompany him the next time he wanted to draw.
Any time but now, in front of Yan Qing Chi, sitting in front of a table with Qiqi, preparing to draw.

Jiang Mo Chen stared at the colored pencil before him and lamented his situation.
He glared fiercely at Yan Qing Chi, convinced that he had made the wrong call in letting the man into his house.
This troublemaker!1

Rewinding twenty minutes prior, Jiang Mo Chen had just entered the room; Qiqi had just begun to draw.
He was very focused when he was drawing.
After he finished drawing the puppy, he colored it in with a watercolor pencil.
When he was done, he sat upright and looked at the two men.

He was young, and so his drawing was inevitably childish.
It was the standard drawing method that kids use.
Yet, after Yan Qing Chi saw this, he followed this drawing style and drew another puppy next to the original.

Qiqi’s eyes curved as he watched him (YQC) draw.
Once he was done, he (QQ) very naturally slid the drawing towards Jiang Mo Chen, and waited for him to draw one too.

Hence, the above description of Jiang Mo Chen’s despondence and regret.

Jiang Mo Chen stared at the drawing that suddenly appeared before him.
He had made an erroneous decision in entering this room—an extremely erroneous decision.
He thought that it would be Yan Qing Chi teaching Qiqi how to draw.
That was why he had planned to observe their interaction while spending time with his son.
But what was with this situation? Why did he have to draw too?!

He mused over this, then glanced over at the culprit, “Weren’t you going to teach him how to draw? Is this how you plan to teach him?”

Yan-the-cause-of-his-suffering leaned back on his arm and replied calmly, “Isn’t drawing an activity done for enjoyment? We can play until Qiqi has had enough, then I’ll teach him.”

“You can teach him right now.” Jiang Mo Chen spit out, placing heavy emphasis on the words ‘right now’.

Yan Qing Chi raised his eyes and assessed him for a moment.
He recalled how the other man had been glaring at him fiercely earlier when his head had been lowered.
As such, he had a conjecture.
He retrieved his arm and said languidly, “That’s fine too.
Be that as it may, I’m a guest and you are Qiqi’s daddy.
Therefore, wouldn’t it be better if we taught Qiqi together?”

Before Jiang Mo Chen could refuse, Yan Qing Chi swiftly pulled out a blank sheet of paper from the table and handed it over with a serene smile, “You can draw however you like first.
Let us understand your drawing style.
Then we can split up the work of teaching.”

Jiang Mo Chen gaped at the smile on his face.
He was utterly gobsmacked by this turn of events.

……This guy was doing this on purpose, wasn’t he?! He was definitely doing this on purpose, wasn’t he?! This troublemaker!!

As the paper was held out before him, Jiang Mo Chen was caught between a rock and a hard place.
2 He could only stiffly say, “You draw first.”

Yan Qing Chi didn’t dawdle.
He picked up a color pencil and began drawing on the blank paper.
As his pencil flew across the paper, Qiqi crowded closer to watch.
Soon, a puppy with eyes that seemed to be curved and which seemed to be smiling appeared.

Yan Qing Chi asked him, “Is it cute?”

Qiqi nodded.
He reached out a hand and stroked the puppy in the drawing, saying softly, “It’s cute.”

Jiang Mo Chen observed that Yan Qing Chi’s drawing style was similar to manhua, although he most likely drew it more cartoon-ish to cater to Qiqi’s tastes.

Just as he was observing, Yan Qing Chi looked up and their gazes collided.
As their eyes met, Jiang Mo Chen was certain that he saw mischief and smugness in the other man’s eyes.
He grinded his teeth inaudibly, and heard Yan Qing Chi announce with a smile, “I’m done.
Young Master Jiang, it’s your turn.”

As his words fell, Qiqi turned towards Jiang Mo Chen with evident anticipation in his eyes.

Confronted with his expectant gaze, Jiang Mo Chen didn’t know how he should handle this situation.
What? Was he supposed to admit, “Sorry about this, Qiqi, Daddy doesn’t know how to draw?” Jiang Mo Chen didn’t think that he would be able to say the words.
It was truly too scary.
Even if twenty or so years had passed, he still lacked the courage to confront this reality……

Yan Qing Chi studied his troubled expression and surmised that his conjecture was probably true.
Who would have thought that a danmei novel’s male lead like Jiang Mo Chen would actually have something that he wasn’t good at—and it was something like drawing! He (YQC) suddenly felt like the person before him seemed to have come to life; he (JMC) was no longer just a series of words and punctuation on a page.

Having confirmed his suspicion and not wanting to make things difficult for Jiang Mo Chen, Yan Qing Chi spoke up, “Never mind.
A wealthy elite son like Young Master Jiang most likely learned orthodox drawing such as sketching when you were younger.
The drawing style is different than ours.
I guess I’ll teach then.”

Jiang Mo Chen let out a sigh of relief, “Then that truly will be troubling Teacher Yan.”

Yan Qing Chi grinned, “You’re welcome.”

Jiang Mo Chen ……Hah.3

Qiqi was listening in on their conversation.
When he heard Yan Qing Chi say that he would be the one to teach, he raised his head towards Yan Qing Chi.

He took another sheet of paper then pointed at the dog that Yan Qing Chi had drawn wordlessly.

“Are you telling me that you want me to teach you how to draw this?” Yan Qing Chi inquired.

Qiqi nodded, gazing at him with sparkling eyes but remaining quiet.

Yan Qing Chi caught the yearning in his eyes, experienced his silence, and felt heartache for him.

Many people in this world had quiet and reserved personalities, but that wasn’t Qiqi’s natural disposition.
He had a childish curiosity and interest towards many things.
He was willing and even ecstatic to try new things.
Although he did not speak most of the time, he would watch you with a pair of eyes that could speak volumes.
Yan Qing Chi reflected upon his own experiences, and thought that Qiqi’s problem probably came from his mentality.
He was most likely warned by someone before—or he did it in self-protection—so he was quiet and obedient, not saying much and not doing much.

This wasn’t something that could be changed in a day or two, but Yan Qing Chi wasn’t worried.
If his marriage with Jiang Mo Chen went smoothly, he still had half a lifetime with this child.
He was confident that he would be able to let the kid feel more secure, so that he would be bouncing around like the other kids in no time.

Yan Qing Chi picked up the pencil and drew a line on the paper.
He glanced at Qiqi who cleverly understood his intention.
He (QQ) also picked up a pencil and copied him in drawing a line.

Then, Yan Qing Chi saw Qiqi very naturally turn to look at Jiang Mo Chen.

Jiang Mo Chen noticed Qiqi turning to look at him and momentarily froze.
He unconsciously looked towards Yan Qing Chi, only to see that the latter was also surprised.
Jiang Mo Chen shot him another fierce glare, thinking to himself, “As I thought, I shouldn’t have let Yan Qing Chi meet Qiqi today.
Now I’ve done it.
Not only did I get roped into drawing, I have to learn how to draw as well!”

At this very moment, right this instant, Jiang Mo Chen eminently wanted to leave this room—or to pass by Qiqi and beat Yan Qing Chi up.
Let him show off again, let him cause trouble again!! 4

Yan Qing Chi saw that he was glaring at him and wordlessly cried out his innocence, “I’ve been wrongly accused! It’s not like I made you learn.
“

“Well, you were the one who wanted me to draw no matter what.” Jiang Mo Chen retorted soundlessly.

Yan Qing Chi believed that he was completely innocent, “I was clearly helping you out there, okay? Otherwise, you would be displaying your drawing skills to Qiqi right now.
”

Jiang Mo Chen sneered, “Who was the one to start this in the first place?”5

Yan Qing Chi’s eyes immediately widened.
The next second, he looked at him passionately with a heartbroken expression mixed with innocence tangled with grievance along with some devastation.6

Jiang Mo Chen turned his head to the side, unable to appreciate this sight.
It was too spicy.
7 The sight was too frightening.
He didn’t dare to look.

Seeing him turn his head, Yan Qing Chi was unable to restrain his smile.
Just as the corner of his mouth rose to a degree, he noticed Qiqi looking at him.
As he was about to ask him what was up, Qiqi turned to look at Jiang Mo Chen.
Jiang Mo Chen could only lower his head to face his gaze and ask, “Is something the matter?”

Footnotes

作精 (zuōjīng) – troublemaker; more accurately “spirit that causes trouble/mischief; spirit makes a ruckus”The original raws said “不知如何进退” (bùzhīrúhéjìntuì), which I would translate as “he didn’t know how to enter or retreat”.
I interpreted it to have the same meaning as the English idiom “stuck between a rock and a hard place” in this context.
Here’s a Baidu page for a similar idiom.呵 (hē) – a cold, humorless laugh; pronounced like “her” but less emphasis on the “r”.
This is phrased positively (“let”), but it’s actually cursing him for showing off and causing trouble for JMC.
Think of it like saying something like “He deserves it for showing off and causing trouble!” All in all, it’s saying that YQC shouldn’t have done so.
The exchange was mouthed up to this point. If anyone wants to provide a better translation of this sentence, please let me know: 下一秒,他一脸哀伤混合着无辜夹杂着委屈甚至还带了些痛心疾首的脉脉的看着他.
In this context, “spicy” refers to the scene being too much to bear (a sight that burns).
It’s the equivalent of someone crying out, “My EYESSS!!!” at seeing something that they did not want to see/”traumatizing”.
