I’m late but to those in the U.S., happy Thanksgiving.
You can check the Discord announcement for possible reasons why this is late.
I gave myself a break but I still have assignments and presentations due as soon as the holiday weekend is over.
Enjoy.

Jing Si Xing leaned against the corner of the stairs as he waited for Yang Qing Chi to make his way back after being turned away at the door.
Then, he would walk out enveloped in Buddha’s aura1 to act as his confidant.

He poked his head out around the corner, watching as Yan Qing Chi lifted his hand up and knocked on the door.
Very good.
Soon Jiang Mo Chen will come out, say a few words with him, then make him leave.

As expected, not long afterwards, Jiang Mo Chen opened the door.
Jing Si Xing continued to watch, his eyes gleaming expectantly.
Jiang Mo Chen opened his mouth, he’s almost done speaking, and then, it’ll be the time for him to close the door.

Just as Jing Si Xing thought so, he witnessed Yan Qing Chi walking straight in!

The door closed after him.

Jing Si Xing was dumbstruck.
He stood there at the corner in utter disbelief.
He actually went in! Jiang Mo Chen told him that he had other appointments and declined his (JSX) request, yet he let an obscure newcomer in.
Jing Si Xing felt humiliated.
He clenched his fist, his nails digging into his flesh.
Why? Why was Yan Qing Chi able to enter, but he couldn’t? Where did he not do well enough? He fawned upon him, ingratiated himself to him (JMC), called him ‘ge’ every day, and partnered with him for two days during filming.
Even with all that, he’s still not any better than a newcomer who hasn’t had much interaction with him (JMC)?

Jing Si Xing surmised that Jiang Mo Chen must be afraid of the consequences, afraid that he (JSX) would rise up in fame by binding their names together.
After all, Yan Qing Chi had nothing whereas he, his popularity wasn’t low.
As long as his popularity rose another level and he won an award, then he would be at the same level as him (JMC).
That was why Jiang Mo Chen was willing to pay attention to Yan Qing Chi—someone who didn’t have anything to offer—compared to him (JSX).
No matter what he did, the other man wouldn’t show him any favorable attention.

At this very moment, Jing Si Xing finally developed feelings other than envy and jealousy for Jiang Mo Chen——hatred.
However, he couldn’t do anything about his hatred.
Jiang Mo Chen was a reputed nobleman2 within the entertainment circle.
Even though no one knew what his background was, everyone knew that he came from a powerful and long-standing background.
Even Wei Lan, famous in the entertainment circle as a ‘bumper car’, would greet Jiang Mo Chen amicably when he met him.
It hadn’t been easy for Jing Si Xing to become popular; he wouldn’t be so dumb as to go and provoke Jiang Mo Chen.
‘Although,’  he curled his lip, ‘some people can’t blame him for being merciless.’

Yan Qing Chi sat on the sofa, looking at the desserts on the table which had yet to be unwrapped, “What’s this?”

“The local specialty that Jing Si Xing brought.
He said that everyone had one, so I didn’t refuse.
What, you don’t have one?”

“Yeah,” He looked at Jiang Mo Chen, “I reckon Su Nuan didn’t receive one either.”

As soon as he heard that, Jiang Mo Chen wordlessly unwrapped that box of desserts and handed one to him.

Yan Qing Chi didn’t take it.
“That’s what other people gave you, you eat it.”

“When did you become so unreasonable?” Jiang Mo Chen wondered as he placed the sweet in his hand, “I know that some actors will be like this.
It’s the entertainment industry, they follow those who hold the authority and influence while attacking those who lose their authority.3 However, by the way I looked at it, he seemed humble enough.
So I didn’t think he was this kind of person.”

“Who are you, you’re the new film emperor4.
You’re the most influential celebrity in this whole cast.
Who wouldn’t be humble in front of you? It’s normal for people to not pay much attention to thirty-eight tiers like us5.”

“Yeah, but you—a thirty-eight tier celebrity who didn’t enter other people’s eyes—don’t seem to be the slightest bit humble in front of me.”

Yan Qing Chi cocked his head and smirked, “That’s different.
Who told us to be a couple? If I was merely a little actor, I would be as humble as Jing Si Xing to you.”

Jiang Mo Chen tried to imagine it, but he seemed unable to actually picture it.
“Forget it,” he said, “I’m more accustomed to how you are right now.
Weren’t we going to run-through our lines? Which scene?”

Yan Qing Chi put down the dessert and flipped open his script to show him, “This one.
The scene when He Yu and Meng Luo first meet.”

“Sure.”

The two of them got to their feet and found a relatively wide spot.
Jiang Mo Chen spoke first, “Hello, are you Meng Luo?”

Yan Qing Chi eyed him warily, his voice very soft, “You are…?”

“My name is He Yu, I’m the officer in charge of Meng Wen—your father—’s homicide case, which occurred on the night of September 14th.” Jiang Mo Chen said while digging out his ID to let him take a look.

Yan Qing Chi nodded, “Your coworker has already come by earlier to ask.”

“I know, I just wanted to ask you again personally.”

“Come in then.” Yan Qing Chi mimicked the motion of opening the door further and making way for the other man to enter.

The two took a seat on the sofa.

Jiang Mo Chen surveyed the house, “Lately you’ve been spending your time at home?”

“I’ve been arranging my dad’s funeral arrangements and organizing his personal belongings.”

Jiang Mo Chen looked at him.
He spoke in a gentle tone, but his words were not as kind, “But, you don’t seem to be very sad.”

Yan Qing Chi lifted his head.
His eyes were very clear with a subtle glint within them.
He asked, “So how should I act to be considered ‘sad’? Should I yell and ask why you still haven’t found the murderer or should I cry myself hoarse?”

His expression was very calm, but his tone was very serious.
Within those unambiguous eyes6 contained the teen’s bewilderment and stubbornness.

Jiang Mo Chen was taken aback.
Then he continued, “That wasn’t what I meant.
I beg your pardon.”

Yan Qing Chi soundlessly lowered his head, “It’s fine.”

His tone reverted to his usual gentle tone.

Next, there were a few routine inquiries.
Only when Jiang Mo Chen ran through the scene with him once did the man discover, to his surprise, that when Yan Qing Chi immersed himself in his role, he was actually much better than he (JMC) had expected.

“Looks like you did listen properly in class when you went to school.” He affirmed.

Yan Qing Chi had just received the evaluation from Director Wang a few days ago that his acting skills were solid.
And now he was acknowledged by Jiang Mo Chen, so he was quite happy, “Really? You think I did pretty well (in acting)?”

“Mn.”

Yan Qing Chi beamed with his eyes curved.
Jiang Mo Chen rarely saw him so happy.
He asked him, “You’re so happy just because I praised you on your acting?”

Yan Qing Chi nodded.
He hadn’t acted before; he had only played along with some people’s feigned civility when networking in certain locations due to his family clan.
He had strong empathy, able to assimilate himself well into the character’s frame of mind.  Nevertheless, at the end of the day, it was his first time stepping foot into this industry.
It was inevitable that he wasn’t that confident in himself.
Yet now that he had been successively acknowledged by people in the industry, this kind of feeling of accomplishment made him elated.

He wanted to share how he felt at the moment with Jiang Mo Chen, hence he tried to incorporate the Original Owner’s identity to convey it, “You also know that my gigs before weren’t good, and I had even fewer television gigs.
The majority were those functionable roles (extras) which could be missed in the blink of an eye.
So, I’m actually not that different than a newcomer who just entered the circle.
I haven’t acted properly in any dramas or movies, and I have no idea how my acting is like.
That day when I went to audition, Director Wang said that my acting was very solid, like I graduated from professional training.
Now you tell me that I acted pretty well.
Suddenly, I’ve been validated by the two of you in succession.
So I just feel quite happy, and there’s a sense of accomplishment.”

Jiang Mo Chen listened to him share his feelings so seriously and couldn’t help being carefree and delighted as well, “You’re so uncertain of yourself, yet at the time you said that we will meet in the cast.”

“See, we did indeed meet in the cast.” Yan Qing Chi said with a smile, “Besides, anyway you say it, you’re the one who recommended me.
If I were to be rejected, then wouldn’t that be a disgrace to your dignity?”

Hearing those words, Jiang Mo Chen opened his mouth to say, “Didn’t you ask me before why you won over Wei Lan? I was busy at the time so I didn’t answer, but I have time now.”

“Why?” Yan Qing Chi was truly rather curious about how he won over Wei Lan.

“Because there are two points that are the most difficult to grasp in acting: one is to ‘release’ and the other is to ‘contain’.7 Wei Lan belongs to the type of actor who can ‘release’.
However, perhaps due to his personality or perhaps his life experience makes him unable to understand some personalities and behaviors, he struggles with ‘retracting’.
Meng Luo is a quiet, taciturn person who has virtually no presence in the early stage of the film.
His sole ‘release’ occurs in the very last scene; in the early stages, he is always ‘contained’.
Wei Lan auditioned with a scene in the early stage, so he wasn’t as suitable as you.”

Yan Qing Chi nodded, “So it was like that.”

“Yan Qing Chi,” Jiang Mo Chen spoke with a firm expression, “You have a talent for acting, so work hard.
Nan Cheng will provide you with very good resources, and I will also help you.
That’s why, I hope that you can become Nan Cheng’s next trump card.”

Yan Qing Chi was taken by surprise, he looked at the man before him who was earnestly sharing his hopes with him, “Jiang Mo Chen.”

“Hm?”

“If you suddenly act like this and say something like that, you’ll make me quite self-conscious.”

Jiang Mo Chen dipped his head and chuckled.
Just as he was about to open his mouth and tease “You have times when you’re self-conscious?”, he sensed that he was embraced.
Yan Qing Chi hugged him, his chin propped on his (JMC) shoulder, his tone gentle yet full of joy, “—And make me kinda want to hug you.”

Jiang Mo Chen inclined his head and looked at him; Yan Qing Chi also inclined his head, and smiled at him with his eyes curved.

He couldn’t help but become frozen in place.
Quietly, soundlessly, he gazed at him.
