Qiqi was young, still at the age where his childlike innocence had not been lost.
When he walked to the stairs, he habitually wanted to jump down.
But just as he was about to jump, he realized that there was an adult beside him so he immediately stopped.
He properly followed Yan Qing Chi as he descended the stairs one step at a time.

Yan Qing Chi noticed his change and asked, “Do you want to play?”

Qiqi raised his head to look at him.

“Jump.” As Yan Qing Chi elaborated, he jumped down to the next step as Qiqi had done earlier.

“It’s your turn.”

Qiqi was momentarily confounded.
He gaped at him in astonishment.

Yan Qing Chi patiently coaxed, “Just jump like I did.”

Only then did Qiqi shuffle forward.
With a hop, he hopped onto the next step.

Yan Qing Chi then continued to jump to the next step, turning to look towards Qiqi.

This time Qiqi didn’t hesitate, quickly jumping down after him.

” ”

Like this, they jumped down the entire flight of stairs.

Yan Qing Chi asked him, “Was that fun?”

Qiqi nodded.

“Then you can play in the future.”

Qiqi’s eyes instantly lit up.

“But,” Yan Qing Chi emphasized, “you can’t secretly play when you’re alone.
You can only play when I or Daddy are with you.”

Qiqi nodded.

“Do you know why?”

Qiqi didn’t answer.

Yan Qing Chi laughed, “If you didn’t know, then why did you nod?”

Qiqi lowered his head, abashed.

Yan Qing Chi held his hand, bent down, and poked the edge of the stair, “Because if I or Daddy aren’t around, and you play by yourself, then if you aren’t careful, you might knock your head against this.
It will be very painful, and possibly leave a scar.”

Qiqi lifted his eyes to gaze at him.
Yan Qing Chi nodded, “It happened to me when I was around your age.
It hurt so much that I cried for a long time.”

Qiqi was surprised, “Uncle also knocked his head against the stairs?”

“I did, so Qiqi must listen to my words.
Otherwise, if you were to knock your head against it, it really would hurt.”

Qiqi nodded, “Qiqi understands.”

“Good boy.” Yan Qing Chi kissed his forehead.

Qiqi rubbed his forehead in wonder.
Then he became embarrassed and shy.

Yan Qing Chi observed his instantaneous reaction and was surprised.
“Has Jiang Mo Chen not kissed him before?” he thought.
Otherwise, he shouldn’t be so obviously shy.

He didn’t ask Qiqi, deciding to ask Jiang Mo Chen some other time.

“C’mon, let’s go eat.”

At the nearby corner of the staircase, Jiang Mo Chen stood there quietly.
He silently witnessed everything that had happened.

In the very beginning, he actually hadn’t thought that Yan Qing Chi and Qiqi would be on such good terms with one another.
Although Qiqi was obedient and sensible, he was too reserved.
Sometimes he was quiet to the point that he (JMC) didn’t know how to get close to him.
But Yan Qing Chi didn’t seem to mind this problem.
He would accompany Qiqi in silence or take the initiative to accompany him to play other games, prompting the latter to use words to express himself.

His appearance was charismatic, carrying some frivolity and haughtiness.
Yet he was very gentle and patient towards Qiqi.
He would play along with his games, consider his feelings and mood, and seriously engage in discussions with him.

He was actually more suitable to be with Qiqi than he (JMC) was.

Jiang Mo Chen recalled his own childhood.
At that time, he was at a mischief-making age1.  He used to love sliding down the stairway railing at home all the time.
At that time, his parents would be furious with him.
His father rebuked him without any explanation.
He (JMC’s father) said that he (JMC) was “thoughtless”, that he (JMC) “had no manners”.
He (JMC) felt wronged and was quite aggrieved, but no one could understand.

Afterwards, it had been his older sister who came to console him.
She told him, “The way that you play, you will easily fall off and get hurt.
Dad is afraid that you will get hurt.
That’s why he was so harsh.”

Jiang Mo Chen didn’t understand, “But that clearly wasn’t what he said.
He doesn’t like me; he yelled at me.”

His older sister leaned against him and smiled gently.
She had a melodic voice.
She said, “If he didn’t like you, then why would he take the trouble of scolding you and personally keeping you in line? He could have let you take a fall and learn from that instead.
Dad’s just not that good at expressing himself.
Don’t harbor these groundless thoughts.”

He didn’t refute, but secretly made up his mind.
When he had kids in the future, he would absolutely convey his feelings properly.
He wouldn’t let his kid(s) have the same misunderstandings that he had towards his own parents.
However, once he really adopted Qiqi and looked at this young yet quiet child, he slowly began to understand his own parents—most of the time, the child would still be too young.
They wouldn’t be able to understand your reasoning.
Rather than repeat your words over and over again, it was easier to just scold them and make them afraid.
Once they were afraid, they wouldn’t dare to do it again.

Of course, he had never scolded Qiqi.
He only felt that he wasn’t able to do as well as he would have liked to2 towards Qiqi sometimes.
His patience wasn’t good enough, nor was he used to guessing other people’s thoughts.
Oftentimes, if Qiqi didn’t speak, he didn’t know what to say either.
In the end, he could only make his leave first.

Jiang Mo Chen felt that sometimes he couldn’t be considered a “good father”.
Most of the time, he wasn’t home.
These three-to-four months after he had adopted Qiqi, he (QQ) had basically been raised by Auntie Zhang and his (JMC) parents.
And when he actually did have some free time, he would only have basic simple interactions with Qiqi due to his impatience.
He didn’t even put in as much thought and effort as Yan Qing Chi.

As he thought about this point, he felt ashamed.
He was resolved to properly spend time with Qiqi during these days.
Needless to say, that was on the premise that Qiqi did not draw.
Even if he did draw, he (QQ) was not allowed to draw in front of Yan Qing Chi!

As Yan Qing Chi set a bowl of congee and a plate of stuffed steamed buns in front of Qiqi, he saw Jiang Mo Chen heading over toward them.
He (YQC) casually ladled out a bowl of congee for him and set it on the other side of Qiqi.

Jiang Mo Chen very naturally took a seat.
He picked up the spoon and took a sip, “Not bad.
It’s better than I thought.”

“Obviously.” Yan Qing Chi glanced at him proudly.

“Do you have anything planned for today?” Jiang Mo Chen asked him, “I need to head out in a bit.
Can you stay home and accompany Qiqi?”

“Sure.”

They finished making the arrangements.
After they finished their breakfast, Jiang Mo Chen changed his clothes and headed out.
Yan Qing Chi cleaned up the house a bit, thought about his plans for the day, and suddenly turned to ask Qiqi, “Do you want to go out to play?”

Qiqi was watching a cartoon.
When he heard him (YQC) say to go out and play, his attention was immediately drawn away from the cartoon.
Face full of anticipation, he nodded.

Yan Qing Chi tousled his hair, “C’mon, let’s go out to play.”

He didn’t bring Qiqi to a place that was too far.
Instead, he chose a nearby mall and accompanied him to the children’s indoor playground.
It had been a long time since Qiqi was taken out to play.
He was attracted to everything.
Yan Qing Chi paid the entry fee and let him play according to his interest.

Qiqi’s eyes were immediately captivated by the trampoline, and he made his way over.

He removed his shoes, preparing to enter the game arena.
Yet, just as he was about to climb up the ladder, he discovered that Yan Qing Chi didn’t keep up with him.

He turned to look for him, only to see Yan Qing Chi waving at him.
Qiqi stood on the ladder, staring at him in puzzlement.

“Go in and play.” Yan Qing Chi saw that he was looking at him and said encouragingly.

Qiqi stared at him.
He slowly descended and walked back to his side.

“You’re not coming?”

“I’ll be watching you on the side.” Yan Qing Chi bent down to explain to him, “Look, I’m too big.
These are for kids your age to play.
I’m not allowed to go in.”

Qiqi was a little reluctant.
He lowered his head and pondered.
Then he put on his shoes and pulled Yan Qing Chi to the side.

Footnotes

The raw/author uses  “招猫逗狗” (beckon/attract cats, tease dogs)which means that he was constantly looking for trouble or up to his shenanigans.Less capable than desired (力不从心) – idiom; not as strong as one would wish / the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.
This idiom means that even though he had the heart to get close to Qiqi and to be a good parent, he finds that he didn’t have the ability to actually do so.
