The rooftop of our private school, Tian Eikan High School, is open at lunchtime and after school, respectively.
Aside from the curriculum, in the current views of “relaxed” education that puts children first, I’m sure people would criticize it, saying it’s dangerous, or that it’s a place for delinquents to hang out.
And the reason why they open the rooftop despite what the public may say is probably because the school’s motto is “self-reliance and independence.” You’re on your own no matter what happens, I’ll raise the fence, but you’re old enough to jump over it and play so it’s your choice, If you want to be a delinquent, go ahead, It’s you who will be in trouble.
That’s their way of  thinking.
I quite like the laissez-faire attitude of taking responsibility for anything that happens.
However, playing ball is prohibited.
Reason being, “If the ball falls over and hits someone below, it will be troublesome”.

Well that’s why the rooftop is so popular with the students. There aren’t that many idiots, if at all, but there are a lot of students who eat on the roof during lunch break.
Like a lot.

“You’re amazing.”

“Really?”

When the four of us – myself, Ryoko, Tomomi, and Kiryu – came to the rooftop, there were quite a few people there.
They were all enjoying their meals and talking in a friendly atmosphere.

“Everyone left just as soon as you came.”

“I didn’t want to eat alone.
And there should be no reason to run away.”

I’m really sorry, Kiryuu really looked like she had something to say.
But you were great, weren’t you? When you came up to the rooftop, they all looked at you twice, then looked away awkwardly, and quickly left.
Maybe they think you’ll snatch them up and eat them? Well It’s mainly due to your everyday behavior.

“The whole place has been reserved for us… Oh well.
Let’s eat, Kiryu-san! Ryoko, give me a sheet! I’ll lay it out!”

“Yes! Tomomi-chan, please take care of it!”

Ryoko takes out a large picnic sheet from her bag and hands it to Tomomi.
The fairly large piece was shaken once with a “wave”, and it spread out neatly into a square.

“Okay, it’s done!  Kiryu-san? Please come in! Sit down~!”

“Eh-ehh.
Th-thanks.”

“…”

“Wh-what is it?”

“No… I was just a little surprised.
I didn’t expect ‘thank you’ to come out of Kiryu-san’s mouth.”

Oh, Tomomi.
That’s pretty rude y’know? If you say that, Kiryu’s ‘villainess’ side will pop out!

“… Yeah.
Certainly, since I came to this school, I may have said “Thank you” only a few times.

“Right? You don’t have an image.”

Huh? It didn’t pop out?

“But it’s not that I’m ungrateful, you know.
Simply, they don’t do anything to be thanked for, and if you invite me to something like this, and you even prepare something like this, of course I’ll thank you.”

Kiryu said, “Thank you,” again, bowed her head and sat down on the leisure seat.
Tomomi and Ryoko nodded and sat down too.

“I wonder… Was it a good decision?”

“Which?”

“Being Higashi Kujo’s “Fiancee”.
Your fiancee.”

She said, glancing at me.

“I wonder if I’m an ‘enemy’ for you guys? At least, I didn’t think it would be a good thing for you two.”

“Enemy, huh? What do you think? Ryoko?”

“Hmmm… Some parts don’t add up for me.”

“Sorry, Kamo-san.”

“Wawawa! Do-don’t apologize! It’s not like it’s your fault, rather it’s Hiroyuki-chan’s father’s fault!”

“You’re not wrong, but don’t you feel a little sorry for him?”

Tomomi and Ryoko are loved by him like his daughter… and in the past few days, his stock price has dropped to a record low.

“I think it’s something that’s hard to admit… no matter the reason.”

“That’s why I said, ‘It doesn’t add up”.
But it can’t be helped… But well, I’m not going to give up.”

“I see.
And Suzuki-san?”

“Wawahi?”

“Hey! What are you eating without permission!”

Tomomi, who had taken the liberty of opening her lunch box and snacking on some fried chicken, replies with her mouth full.

You’re supposed to eat with everyone else!

“Ng..Riiight..”

Saying that she crossed her arms and groaned.

“Well if I had to choose between friend and foe.
I would choose “foe”.”

“I see..”

“But if you ask me if I don’t like it… I don’t hate it too much.”

“Even though we are enemies?”

“Well… I don’t know.
I’m on the basketball team, you see.”

“I know.
You’re famous.”

“Yeah.
Well, when you play basketball, all the other teams in the venue are “the enemy”.
But you know what? It’s not that I don’t like them.”

“You mean the spirit of “no sides”?”

“What’s that?”

“During the game, of course, you’re enemies, but when the game’s over, there’s no friend or foe.”

“Ah yeah yeah.
It’s something like that.
Everyone loves basketball, so you can’t really hate the enemy, can you?”

Tomomi says so and picks up the omelette.

“Besides, according to what Kiryu-san says, don’t you think Ryoko and I would never be able to get along?”

“Indeed.”

“Well, to get back to basketball, I think kids who ‘love basketball’ are allies, regardless of their team.
That’s if you love basketball.
But if you don’t genuinely like basketball then you’re the enemy, right?”

“This hurts my ears.”

“I think you are a special case.
Besides, I could tell from talking to you that you don’t seem to be a bad person.”

“Is that so?”

“Well you can speak normally.
The fact that you’re called the “Villainess” might just be a misunderstanding.”

“I don’t really like that nickname.
I’m sorry, but could you–”

“Ah, of course I’m not going to call you that.
But, well, you know they call you that, right?”

“Of course.
They call me ‘Villainess’ behind my back.”

“Do you know that there’s a lot of jealousy involved?”

“Of course.
I’m good at what I do, if I do say so myself.
Naturally, I get a lot of criticism.”

“Don’t you think you should change the way you treat people, Kiryu-san? That would change everyone’s attitude a lot, wouldn’t it?”

Ryoko tilts her head saying so.
As a reply, Kiryu shows a tired smile.

“I agree with what you say Kamo-san.
I would have an easier life that way.
But it doesn’t solve the root problem.
Why should I bend the results of my hard work for the opinions of those around me?”

It’s my nature, Kiryu said with a wry smile and a cowering shoulder.
Ryoko and Tomomi rolled their eyes at her and then turned their gazes to me.

“Huh? What is it?”

“Iya~~”

“I see.”

“What do you mean?”

“Mhm, your story I mean.
I kinda understood.”

“Understood?”

“The story! Besides, Kiryu-san..
Um..”

“Ahhhh.
There you are!”

Suddenly, the door to the rooftop opens with a bang.
I turned my head to see who it was.

“Yahoo~! Hiroyuki-senpai! Let’s have lunch together!”

A little girl with twin-tailed hair was standing there–
